On July 2nd, an inter-ministerial meeting on the future development of Latvia's space policy was held at the Ministry of Economics.
Given the rapid growth of the global space economy and Latvia’s surprisingly broad and dynamic space sector, it is essential to ensure its strategic development and effective governance. Latvia is currently home to around 70 companies operating in a range of specialized niches and technological fields — from innovative materials and instruments like globally unique gyroscopes and ultra-precise time-measurement devices, to microelectronics and satellite data. In order to maintain and strengthen Latvia's competitiveness in the global market, targeted action and a long-term vision are necessary.
The meeting was opened by the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Economics, Jurģis Miezainis, who emphasized Latvia’s pragmatic approach to space industry development — focusing on export-oriented, high value-added technologies and the use of satellite data for digitalization across sectors such as agriculture, forestry, security, environmental monitoring, maritime affairs, energy, and more.
Representatives from seven Latvian ministries presented their current initiatives and needs in the space sector. The goal of the meeting was to identify common ground for coordinated and cohesive development of the industry.
The Parliamentary Secretary also encouraged expanding Latvia’s vision by strategically developing the sector into a broader aerospace industry, which could deliver horizontal benefits across other branches of the economy.
Many thanks to the ministry representatives for their participation!
