On June 17–18 in Gdańsk, Poland, the Digital Summit took place, with Latvia represented by the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Economics (MoE), Jurgis Miezainis.
The summit brought together leading European industry companies, international organizations, government institutions, and research institutes, with special attention given to the Baltic region.
J. Miezainis participated in the panel discussion “The Baltic Digital Perspective – The Experiences of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in Digital Transformation” alongside Estonia’s Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs, Liisa-Ly Pakosta, and Paulius Petrauskas, Special Adviser to the Lithuanian Minister of Economy and Innovation.
J. Miezainis emphasized that the efficiency of business processes and public administration is a priority for Latvia, which the country strengthens through digital solutions and a responsible approach to data security.
The discussion highlighted the need to foster cooperation among the Baltic states, with the Parliamentary Secretary citing one of the European Space Agency’s success stories as a best practice example—the Baltic Earth Observation Platform, developed under the coordination of the Latvian company Baltic Satellite Service.
He reminded participants that even small countries can be giants—in both sports and innovation—provided there is clear and targeted state support for building such success stories.
During his visit, J. Miezainis met with representatives from several organizations with which Latvia maintains strategically important cooperation:
-
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. As AI platforms require high electricity capacity, J. Miezainis emphasized Latvia’s unique infrastructure: currently, only a third of the electricity grid’s capacity is in use, and Latvia is one of the EU leaders in the use of green energy. Sandro Gianella, Head of Partnerships and Policy at OpenAI, also expressed interest in the Latvian language technology company Tilde, which provides high-quality AI-based translation services for smaller languages;
-
A delegation led by the Deputy Minister for Digital Affairs of Poland. The Polish side expressed interest in meeting with the MoE Parliamentary Secretary and Rinalds Celmiņš, Director of the Digital Policy Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, to gain deeper insights into Latvia’s e-governance experience. In the Digital Decade 2025 report, Latvia was recognized as one of the EU leaders in implementing e-services in public administration;
-
The German Federal Ministry of Finance. During a meeting organized by the Ministry, J. Miezainis shared Latvia’s best practices for improving efficiency and productivity in public administration, which is currently a priority for the Ministry of Economics;
-
The Polish Space Agency, the Polish Space Industry Association, and the Chair of the EU Space Working Group. The meeting focused on future cooperation opportunities with Latvia’s space industry. Following J. Miezainis’ visit to Warsaw in May, the Polish Institute of Space Economy included several Latvian organizations in a joint EU program. This time, discussions aimed at organizing a matchmaking event for Latvian and Polish space industry players and exploring the use of Latvian space technologies in Polish space missions.
The Digital Summit was a valuable opportunity to share Latvia’s experience and vision on digitalization and cybersecurity, as well as to strengthen connections for future international cooperation.
