LR ekonomikas ministrs un ASV vēstniece Latvijā

The United States of America (USA) is a strategic partner of Latvia, and there are broad opportunities for cooperation between companies from both countries. Among the most promising areas of cooperation are energy, defense, artificial intelligence, and the development of digital technologies.

This was discussed on Wednesday, April 1, during a meeting at the Ministry of Economics between the ministry’s leadership and the U.S. Ambassador to Latvia, Melisa Arģirōsa. The discussion focused on deepening economic relations between the two countries and promoting direct cooperation at a time when global economic dynamics require ever closer partnerships.

Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis and the U.S. Ambassador discussed opportunities to expand cooperation between Latvian and American companies, as well as Valainis’s planned visit to the United States later this year, which will follow visits that took place in the autumn of last year and earlier this year. The minister emphasized that Latvian entrepreneurs are ready to engage more actively in the U.S. market, while the ambassador noted that the United States values Latvia as a reliable partner, appreciates the business ideas of Latvian entrepreneurs, and believes that Latvia needs to do more to raise awareness among potential U.S. investors and partners. To promote cooperation, Valainis proposed organizing a broad international business conference in Latvia once a year, also involving partners from other Baltic and Scandinavian countries.

“The cooperation potential between countries in this region and the United States is significant and is largely influenced by the business environment in Latvia. Many improvements have been achieved recently,” said U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Melisa Arģirōsa during the meeting.

A significant part of the discussion was devoted to investment opportunities in strengthening Latvia’s energy independence, as well as in transit, nuclear energy, and the development of port and logistics infrastructure. “These areas are strategically important not only for economic growth but also for the security and resilience of the region. We must seek all possible solutions and the strongest partners to enhance Latvia’s economic independence and promote growth, especially at a time when we are facing global challenges,” said Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis.

During the meeting, Latvia’s potential participation in the Pax Silica initiative, proposed by the Ministry of Economics, was also discussed. This could become one of the most significant new investment directions in Latvia. Pax Silica is a U.S.-led international initiative aimed at establishing secure, reliable, and strategically coordinated supply chains for technologies that are critical to the development of artificial intelligence and modern industry.

Cooperation in crypto (blockchain) technologies and digital finance was also discussed.

The possibility of establishing direct flights between Latvia and the United States was also addressed, ensuring the development of regular passenger and cargo transportation. The minister emphasized that such a connection would significantly facilitate business contacts and tourism flows, while the U.S. side acknowledged that the issue is worth discussing, given the growing interest in the Baltic region.

In 2025, the United States was Latvia’s 12th largest export partner and 13th largest import partner. By the end of 2025, accumulated U.S. direct investment in the Latvian economy had reached EUR 448 million, accounting for 1.7% of total accumulated foreign direct investment and ranking 13th. Compared to 2020, accumulated U.S. direct investment in Latvia has increased 3.2 times.
