On December 11 this year, Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis visited the Valmiera region for a regional visit, during which he visited LEGRO Latvija Ltd and the cooperative society VAKS. While learning about the companies’ future plans, the minister informed them about the available support measures and encouraged them to use these resources to achieve their set goals.
The minister got acquainted in person with the companies’ operations, development plans, and challenges, and also discussed the availability of state support instruments to promote entrepreneurship.
LEGRO Latvija Ltd is a stable player in the peat extraction and substrate production sector, operating in close synergy with AS Seda. The company produces high value-added peat substrates, which are almost entirely exported to foreign markets.
In November 2025, LEGRO Latvija was nominated for the “Valmiera Municipality Business of the Year” award in the category “Exporter of the Year” and received a certificate of honor for its contribution to promoting exports. The minister emphasized that the company’s operations represent a significant contribution to Latvia’s export balance and demonstrate the ability of local entrepreneurs to compete in the global market.
VAKS Cooperative is one of the leading agricultural cooperatives in Latvia, uniting more than 630 farms across the country and actively operating since 1999. The cooperative provides plant protection products, mineral fertilizers, microelements, agricultural machinery, and services, supporting sustainable development for farmers.
During the visit, the minister discussed with the cooperative’s management the available state and EU support programs, including loans with capital discounts, credit guarantees, and microloans, which can help cooperative members increase productivity, develop new activities, and promote exports.
"I am pleased with the achievements of regional entrepreneurs and their persistent efforts to grow and develop. Therefore, I consider it my duty to provide information on how the state can assist in their development and future growth," emphasized Minister of Economics V. Valainis.
V. Valainis regularly visits Latvian companies, and regional visits are one of the measures that allow him to understand the current issues, problems, and needs of local businesses.
