On June 3, Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis visited Valmiera on a regional trip to meet in person with entrepreneurs and representatives of the local government. During the meeting, several important issues were discussed, including state support for businesses, improvements to the public procurement system, and current developments in the labor market.

“The regions have great potential that must be strengthened at the national level through targeted policy and practical support. By meeting with entrepreneurs, we listen to their needs and provide explanations about available solutions. Our goal is to create a flexible, competitive, and business-friendly environment throughout Latvia,” emphasized Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis.

One of the main topics was state support for small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in transitioning to more sustainable business models. The Minister informed participants about available financial instruments – grants, loans, and support from competence centers – and noted that new support program calls are planned in the coming months.

Special attention was also given to improving the public procurement system, aiming to strengthen opportunities for local manufacturers to participate in state and municipal projects. Possible regulatory improvements were discussed, as well as the need to enhance the competence of procurement professionals and promote innovation-friendly procurement.

Labor market issues were also addressed – including the efficiency of the sick leave system and discussions about changes to overtime pay regulations, which significantly impact both employers and employees.

During the visit, the Minister toured the construction site of the “Liepkalni” bakery and reviewed the construction of a low-rent residential building in Valmiera, which serves as an important example of affordable housing development in the regions.

The Minister also met with representatives of Valmiera Municipality Council and the following companies:

“VRPB,” “Etepek,” “VSS,” “Smiltenes piens,” “Valpro,” “LVKV,” “Valtanks,” “Avoti,” “TC Valleta,” “Valmieras tirgus,” “Liepkalni,” the social enterprise “Malvīna,” “Latvian Grain Growers Cooperative VAKS,” “Thermal Tec / Padtex Insulation,” and “Woltec.”
