Discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and developing cooperation potential in strategically important sectors – renewable energy, digitalisation, and biotechnology – concluded with a meeting between the leadership of the Ministry of Economics of Latvia and the Minister-President of the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig, and her delegation.

During the talks, officials highlighted the importance of regional cooperation for strengthening security and economic resilience in the Baltic Sea region. Specific cooperation opportunities were discussed, including the involvement of Latvian and German companies in the development of green energy and hydrogen projects, as well as potential cooperation with companies such as Liebherr and Apex Group.

“Latvia and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern share common interests in strategically important areas such as renewable energy, digitalisation, and biotechnology. This meeting is an important step toward closer economic cooperation, which will strengthen the resilience of our region and open new opportunities for entrepreneurs in both countries,” emphasized Minister for Economics Viktors Valainis.

Mr. Valainis particularly commended Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s experience in the energy sector, as well as the close involvement of both regions in the Baltic Hub project, which aims to connect the electricity grids of Latvia, Lithuania, and Germany. Latvia is actively expanding its renewable energy capacity and aims to become a regional exporter of green electricity and hydrogen.

The meeting also underlined cooperation opportunities in the field of digitalisation – both in public administration processes and in smart logistics and cybersecurity solutions for the maritime sector. Latvia is currently the only EU country where the construction permitting process is fully digitalised and is ready to share its experience with German partners.

Cooperation between Latvia and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will continue at the business forum scheduled to take place in Rostock on 26 September 2025, where Latvia will be the partner country.

As part of the visit, a delegation of around 35 representatives from the digitalisation, energy, and innovation sectors, as well as from the Rostock Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is visiting Latvia. The business delegation includes representatives from companies such as 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, General Dynamics European Land Systems-FWW GmbH, Ferdinand Schultz Nachfolger, AIRSENSE Analytics GmbH, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems GmbH and others. A dedicated programme was prepared for the delegation in cooperation with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia and the German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce, including a visit to the company LMT and participation in the Deep Tech Atelier conference.

This visit marks an important step towards deeper cooperation between Latvia and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, based on shared values, regional security interests, and a common vision for the green and digital transition.
