On Thursday, 29 August, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Economics, Jurģis Miezainis, participated in the inauguration of the first carbon capture testing and research project in Latvia, held in Brocēni at the SCHWENK Latvia cement plant.

This project represents an important step not only toward achieving investment goals but also toward meeting Latvia’s climate targets. It includes the launch of a technology testing campaign, with the aim of eventually creating a new value chain—from CO₂ capture to its further utilization and storage.

“Schwenk Latvia can now become a cornerstone, opening opportunities for a range of new industries—in carbon capture, transport, storage, and, most importantly, further utilization, both in the chemical industry and in food processing,” emphasized J. Miezainis at the event.

SCHWENK Latvia, as the country’s only cement producer and one of the largest industrial investors, is committed to implementing CO₂ capture technologies at its Brocēni plant, with the goal of establishing an industrial-scale facility by 2030 that would achieve up to an 8% reduction in Latvia’s total emissions.
