At the Cabinet of Ministers meeting on February 18 of this year, the government approved amendments proposed by the Ministry of Economics to the Cabinet regulations regarding the list of measuring instruments subject to state metrological control. These amendments cancel or significantly reduce the frequency of repeated verification for several measuring instruments, thereby significantly reducing administrative burdens and costs for businesses.

"The decision to cancel or extend the periodic verification of a range of measuring instruments is a necessary step toward simplifying the business environment. This will allow entrepreneurs to reduce administrative burdens and costs while maintaining measurement reliability. The Ministry of Economics continues to evaluate opportunities to further reduce unnecessary regulatory requirements to promote a more efficient and business-friendly regulatory framework," emphasizes Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis.

From now on, repeated verification has been canceled for the following measuring instruments:

  • Length, area, and multidimensional measuring instruments (previously required once per year);
  • Meters, rulers, and measuring tapes (previously required once every two years);
  • Weights (previously required once every two years).

Meanwhile, the periodicity of repeated verification has been extended for the following measuring instruments:

  • Measuring rods and measuring tapes with weights for measuring liquid levels in tanks – verification will now be required once every three years (previously required once per year);
  • Scales (Class III and IIII) – verification will now be required once every two years (previously required once per year);
  • Scales used for mass determination in commercial transactions (trade scales) – verification will now be required once every three years (previously required once per year).

As a result of these amendments, we have reduced costs for businesses. For example, there will no longer be a fee for the repeated verification of:

  • Weights (€18),
  • Measuring rulers (€13),
  • Measuring tapes (€53),
  • Average speed measurement systems (€1,500).

Additionally, a retailer's savings on verifying a single trade scale over three years will amount to €80.

The amendments to the Cabinet regulations on the list of measuring instruments subject to state metrological control will take effect on February 18 of this year.
